Is Lana Del Rey hinting at a new collaboration with The Weeknd?

Lana Del Rey and The Weeknd have been long admirers of each other’s work, and in recent times have collaborated on songs together.

Lana Del Rey has appeared on The Weeknd’s “Prisoner” from his 2015 album Beauty Behind the Madness as a featured artist, and also on two tracks from Abel’s 2016 album Starboy – she was a featured artist on “Stargirl Interlude” and also provided vocals on the outro for “Party Monster”.

They’ve spoken fondly of each other’s work multiple times over the years, and in a 2015 interview with Pitchfork, The Weeknd claimed that Del Rey was “the girl in [his] music”:

Me and Lana have been friends for a long time. I’ve inspired her, she’s inspired me. I feel like we’ve always been talking to each other through our music. She is the girl in my music, and I am the guy in her music. It’s just this ghostly collaboration that feels the most natural on the whole album. Even the whole monologue intro on “Lonely Star” from Thursday—I just realized now that that’s Lana. That’s Lana’s voice. [laughs] I mean, it’s my voice pitched up, but it’s her, it’s who she is. She was definitely the first feature that I wanted to bring on this album.

This friendship doesn’t appear to be ending any time soon – in a tweet today, Lana simply wrote “XO” with a love heart emoji which is surely a reference to The Weeknd’s label “XO”.

So what does this mean?

There are a number of reasons what Lana Del Rey could be referencing to here:

  1. We will soon be hearing a new song from Lana Del Rey and The Weeknd: There’s a chance that this means we could soon be hearing a new song between the pair again. Lana Del Rey is working on her fifth studio album after releasing the first single “Love” from it recently. There’s a good chance that The Weeknd could be featuring on it.
  2. We will soon be hearing a new song from Lana Del Rey and another XO artist: XO is making moves this year, with Belly, Nav and Derek Wise (and of course The Weeknd), XO is firmly securing its limelight. This could mean that Lana Del Rey is linking up with another XO artist for a track.
  3. Her love for The Weeknd/another XO artist’s music: A simple theory here – Lana could simply be showing that she’s a fan of The Weeknd and XO.

What do you think? We’d love to see some new music from Lana Del Rey and XO – fingers crossed!
